Photo Story Friday--Hawaiian Vacation

This month marked the one year anniversary to our dream vacation to Hawaii. Are you jealous? That I got to go to Hawaii? Well then, you probably haven't heard the whole story!
As I already mentioned, we went to Maui last December. It just so happened that a storm vacationed there the same week. I'm talking the biggest storm Hawaii has seen in over 50 years! Still jealous?

It rained and rained and rained. There were more than 60 mph winds in some areas. The schools were closed. The power was out. All of the traffic lights were down, which means traffic was a nightmare. We managed to find one supermarket that was actually open, where we were able to buy some food and a few candles (flashlights were sold out!)
This was the only long sleeved shirt I packed. I wore it a lot! Two souvenirs I bought for myself in Hawaii were a rain jacket and a hooded sweatshirt! Is that bad?
This particular stormy day, we decided to drive the road to Hana. This is a very narrow road and you pass a lot of cool waterfalls on your way. Supposedly some of the waterfalls are cute and little and there is one called the Seven Sacred Pools. Well, all we saw were huge, angry, dirty waterfalls. There were definitely no pools. The water was raging! At one point in our drive, we were driving through several feet of water. At another point, there was a huge boulder in the middle of the road and I think it took at least 5 guys to lift it and carry it out of the way. We talked to some of the locals after the fact and they were shocked that we had done the road to Hana in this weather. And even more shocked that we actually made it. Stupid tourists.
The actual storm only lasted a day or two, but the aftermath was bad. Really bad. A lot of restaurants had signs up that said they didn't have any food. The beaches were closed. The Kihei beach was completely washed away. There was a huge drop off where the beach was supposed to be. Some lifeguard stands were toppled over. Cars were smashed, some were washed away. There were tons of buildings completely flooded. There were some mudslides. Really bad.

The day after Hana, the rain had stopped. We decided we would try to find an open beach where we could try body boarding. We did find one and we pretty much had it all to ourselves. We had fun playing and body boarding. My brother went down the beach a bit to see if he could find any good snorkeling spots. He ended up getting slammed into a coral and cutting his foot wide open. Off to the ER with him. His Pauly Shore lookalike doctor wanted to know why the heck he was in the water! Stupid tourists.
At one point in the trip, my brother tried to take us to his favorite snorkel spot. Wouldn't you know it, the whole area was closed due to an old World War II bomb that was found and never detinated. What are the odds, seriously?

We had prepaid to go on a boat out to Molokini Crater. This is supposed to be one of the best snorkeling sites ever. Our first few tries they cancelled it all together. On our last day we could possibly go, they said they would take us. We went and this was my very first snorkeling experience ever. I saw some octopuses and lots of fish. I really liked it. I thought it was so cool! Apparently, it wasn't. I guess it was really bad, in fact. So bad that they refunded our money. Guess I didn't know what I was missing...
My first snorkeling adventure
We went snorkeling the next day at a different spot. I got to swim with turtles! I really liked that! I think that was my favorite part of the whole trip! I've been told that the clarity that day really sucked, but once again I thought it was great. (Maybe it's good to not know any better? Then you won't be as disappointed!)

We did have one more mishap. We stayed in a condo amongst hundreds of condos. It just so happened that some lady had trouble with her unattended washing maching and her unit and the two below hers flooded. Could our luck get any worse? Yep, 3 condos out of hundreds, and 2 of them were ours (not the one with the washing machine, though!)
Some of the group
Just so you all know, these types of problems are not uncommon with my family. Our vacations usually bring rain. Luckily, we are the type of people that make jokes and laugh about it all. We laugh about this all the time! And we all hope to go back some day and have a much better experience!

You are all wishing you could come on vacation with us right about now, huh?!

We did have a lot of fun, too. We did some great shopping. We went to a show in Lahaina and it was awesome! It was called "Warren and Anabelle's Magic" and I highly recommend it if you're ever in the area. The magic was awesome, but so was the comedy. I laughed the whole time! I will totally go to it again when I go back.

We actually flew to Oahu for the last few days of our trip and there we were able to go to the temple, the Polynesian Cultural Center and a Luai. We also did a shark excursion where we went out in the ocean and got into one of those big metal cages. That was awesome. I am deathly afraid of sharks and it was crazy! There were sharks everywhere!!
Oh, the memories. Wow, this ended up being a long post. Is anyone still with me?

Meanwhile back at the ranch, or rather back at my house, things did not go well. I had my sister in law babysit my kids. Her week was filled with chaos and puke. You can read her side of the story here and here.

Want to play along?

I was laughing about the 7 pools...my parents went right after a stormand they said the EXACT same thing.

Hopefully your next trip will be a little less rainy.

It sounds like you made the best out of the crappy weather and you did do lots of touristy things...even if some of them were life-threatening and left family members in the ER!

That sounds so miserable!! At least you made the best of it. What a bummer though. I have never been to Hawaii, but I really want to go. I will be sure to check the forecast before I book!

Great memories. The only thing I would add is on the road to Hanna I teased your sister about wanted to turn around. Just after that small boulders slid on to the road between our cars. Fun stuff.

Nice tattoo on the last pic.

Were kids with you this time around? no?

how great that you could still enjoy an otherwise crazy & someone disappointing vacation. man, too bad they couldn't give you one big raincheck on everything - no pun intended!

Now that's a dream vaca!! We didn't have bad weather when we went, but I got really sick my first day. I think it might have been food poisioning...haven't had Thai fried rice since 2002! I was still woozy on the Road to Hana. And as for snorkeling at Molokini...the Caribbean is the best! Yucatan Peninsula.

Fun pictures :)

You went snorkeling in murky water? You are braver than I because sharks LOVE murky water!

I love that tattoo, btw.

That is one crazy adventure. We went to Maui for our Honeymoon 5 years ago and it was awesome. We did many of the same things you did however minus the insane weather.

I am so happy to hear that you had a good time even with the weather. It is such a beautiful place. I would LOVE to go back.

You just brought back a ton of memories for me. When we were in Hawaii we also did the road to Hana. We did not go all the way (was getting dark) we also snorkeled to molokini. I am just sad that you did not have the best weather. You will have to go back!
